Roofing Reruns:
A Photo a Day: Week 30

Day 204
July 23: Did you know that after you shovel the shingles off your roof you are left with something that looks like this? I spent a few hours on the roof this morning, removing the nails and paper still left left on the front side of the roof while Honey Daddy and Papa worked on shingling up the other side. So fun!

Day 205
July 24: Today we visited the Kennecott Copper Mine. The boys loved looking at all the HUGE equipment. I loved looking at the terraced walls of the mine.

Day 206
July 25: We spent a fun evening having an extended family dinner. After good food and conversation we watched a movie with the boys. We ended up keeping the little guys up late enough that we got to let them do sparklers when it was dark out. So fun and pretty too!

Day 207
July 26: Honey Daddy has been getting up early to work on the roof every morning. He and Papa work until about noon and then take a break during the heat of the day. This morning when Honey Daddy left, somebody else climbed into bed with me. It seems our late night made Jonah extra tired this morning. I think he's extra cute too, all cuddled up in Mommy and Daddy's bed.

Day 208
July 27: Hallelujah! The roof is almost done. Today the shingles reach nearly up to the peak of the house. Honey Daddy and Papa got the ridge vent cut and the end is in sight! It's a good thing too because this whole project has us all pretty exhausted.

Day 209
July 28: This evening Grandma and I took the boys to a local park to play for a while. I took my camera with me, hoping to find something to photograph other than our roof. There was a butterfly on the play equipment that kept fluttering around me, who was kind enough to let me take his picture. I also thought the clouds that evening were stunning.

Day 210
July 29: It is finished! Today Honey Daddy and Papa put the cap shingles on top of our new ridge vent. Re-shingling our roof turned out to be a lot more time consuming than we expected, but the new roof is beautiful and best of all it is DONE!

A Visit to the Kennecott Copper Mine

Saturday we were on our way home from the Salt Lake City airport and we decided to stop off at the Kennecott Copper Mine and take advantage of their last free admission day.

The Kennecott Copper Mine is the largest man-made excavation on earth. Even this photo doesn't really give you an accurate idea of how HUGE it is!

The mine is 2-3/4 miles across at the top and 3/4 of a mile deep. At the visitor's center we learned that the mine is so big, it can be seen by the space shuttle astronauts as they pass over the United States!

The boys thought it was fun to stand on the overlook and watch the trucks working below. I personally thought the terraced rock walls all around the sides of the mine were interesting to look at.

I have to agree with the boys-- the trucks were pretty awesome too. I would like to have seen one up close. You can see that the trucks actually have a ladder on the front so the operator can climb up to the cab! We learned that trucks that haul the copper ore are larger than many houses and weigh more than a jumbo jet. They stand over 23 feet tall and can carry from 255 to 360 tons of rock.

Can you imaging trying to drive one of those trucks around? We didn't get to climb on or walk around one of them, but we did get to stand next to one of the tires.

You definitely don't want to get in front of one of these truck tires! Yikes!

They also had some really cool giant electric shovels. They can scoop up as much as 98 tons in a single bite -- about the weight of 50 cars!

The boys had a great time at the copper mine. It was definitely a wonderland for little boys, and this Mommy actually enjoyed it too! We all loved watching all the equipment in action and it was definitely a site worth seeing!

The Roofing Saga
A Photo A Day: Week 29

Day 197
July 16: Today our BIG dumpster arrived in preparation for our roofing project. Is it weird that I put my boys in the dumpster to take their picture? They thought it was fun, so I guess I'll stick with fun rather than strange.

Day 198
July 17: I thought the clouds looked lovely today. We could use some cloud cover for our roofing project, but NO rain!

Day 199
July 18: Today I realized that I never take pictures of Mount Timpanogos in the summer. So here is the view behind my house for this time of year.

Day 200
July 19: I drive by this enormous carved corn cob on my way to a nearby Wal*Mart. It's lovely, don't you think?

Day 201
July 20: We started working on the roof today. By the end of the day we had shoveled the shingles off half of the house! Hooray! The forecast called for sunny weather all week. So of course at 10:30 p.m. it started to pour buckets. So we were on the roof in the dark spreading out tarps and drop cloths so the water would not soak into the plywood. Fun times, let me tell you!

Day 202

July 21: After putting the boys to bed I went up to check out the progress on the roof. The back side of the roof is completely covered with underlayment so now we don't have to worry about water. There are also some new shingles up there. Hooray! So I got to relax and watch the sunset from the rooftop. So beautiful! I couldn't decide which picture I liked better, so you get both.

Day 203
July 22: New shingles are a beautiful sight to behold! This evening while I am at work a bunch of our friends will show up to help shovel the shingles off the front of our house. Then we will really get to laying the rest of the shingles! We are so happy for the help because Honey Daddy and Papa are exhausted!

Up on the Roof

Our big summer project is now in full swing.

First the roofing supply truck came and put tons of shingles, underlayment and nails on top of our house.
Then the BIG dumpster showed up in front of our house.

I promise we didn't leave the boys in the dumpster!

Then this morning Honey Daddy and Papa started shoveling the shingles off the house. Naturally the boys wanted to help. So we let them go up on the roof and pick up nails to put in the bucket.

I wasn't too nervous about Jonah being on the roof. He has a healthy sense of fear and self-preservation.

Eli on the other hand has absolutely no fear. We had to tell him repeatedly to walk, not run on the roof! So I kept my eye on him, as did Honey Daddy and Papa.
We have some wonderful neighbors and friends who are up on the roof right now, helping us shovel the rest of the shingles off. Then for the next couple of mornings and evenings Honey Daddy and Papa will be working in the sun to get new shingles on our house.

I have the best roofing crew ever! I hope the work goes well and swiftly. I hope the weather is cooperative and not too hot. I can't wait for the roof to be finished!

A Photo a Day: Week 28

Day 190
July 9: Today I spend several hours weeding our garden. We have been so busy lately that it has been a tad neglected. I filled an entire wheelbarrow with the weeds that I pulled! I also discovered that I am starting to get some lovely cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes. Yum!

Day 191

July 10: We did a little more gardening today. You would not believe how tall my tomato plants are! Can you even see Eli in there? Some of the tomato plants are as tall as I am, and that is after Honey Daddy cut the tops off! In other excitement, we got our caterpillars in the mail today! Did you know you can actually order caterpillars online so you can watch them transform into butterflies? Too cool! The boys are SO excited.

Day 192
July 11: Every time I ride my bike down by the lake near sunset I get to watch the ducks and cranes as I speed by. So today I drove down by the lake with the family so we could all watch them... a bit more slowly.

Day 193
July 12: We are still going to swimming lessons each and every day.

Day 194
July 13: A rather large truck showed up today to deliver the supplies so we can re-shingle our roof next week (wahoo). The boys were fascinated with the delivery truck, which had a conveyor belt on its movable arm to send the supplies up to the top of our roof. I was fascinated with the bundles of nails that will be used to attach the shingles to the roof. Aren't they all coppery and pretty?

Day 195
July 14: For Jonah's preschool this week we made some cool foam makers. These were so easy to make! You just cut the end off a plastic bottle, rubber band a piece of old towel to the bottom, dip in water once and then go crazy with the bubble solution! The kids had fun seeing how long they could make their the foam strings.

Day 196
July 15: Did you know that the magic ingredient for swimming under water is a pair of dollar-store goggles?

Proud Mama at the Pool

Every day for the past week or so we have been hanging out at the pool. I would like to say we were enjoying sun and sand, but we were actually at the pool for swimming lessons.

Jonah has been a bit timid when it comes to the water, so we decided it would be good for him to take swimming lessons. So I signed both the boys up and headed for the pool.

I did not think that Jonah would even come close to passing his class because he didn't like putting his head under the water. In order to pass the class he would need to do 10 bobs in the water, which didn't seem very likely to me.

I am happy to say that I have been pleasantly surprised! Jonah has taken to the water like a little fish. By the fourth day he was putting his entire head under the water multiple times! I was so amazed.

Instead of getting out of the water with dry hair, he comes out wet all over every time. It makes me so proud!

Eli has been enjoying his little class as well. It has been nice for me that I haven't had to try to keep him out of the water and entertained!

So both boys LOVE swimming lessons! They get to play games in the water and splash around with their teacher and friends. Jonah is having so much fun that the first thing he asks me each morning is if we get to go to swimming lessons today.  Guess maybe we'll sign up for a second session later in the session.
