I know that for many of you this time of year means "back to school". Since my boys are both under the age of four, that doesn't really apply to me yet.
Around here August is the start of home canning season! Just check out what I picked from my garden the other day:
Tons of tomatoes and more than a bushel of peaches. I already canned 14 quarts of peach pie filling over the weekend and can't believe I still have so many peaches!
So yesterday I decided that I'd better get busy. The boys love to help me use the strainer attachment for my Kitchen Aid to get rid of the tomato seeds and skins.
It took me a few hours to get through all those tomatoes. Then I had to add the onions and spices and cook the spaghetti sauce for a bit. I filled my 23 quart pot up to the top! Then I bottled the sauce. I was up until after 11 p.m. last night getting it done. Boy was I tired! But the spaghetti sauce sure is delicious... and beautiful!
Now if only all those peaches weren't still sitting there waiting for me! Oh the joys of home canning. At least my pantry will be full over the winter, right?

OMGOSH! How funny! I just canned my spagetti sauce today (I leave the skins & seeds in, but use the food processor to break them down). I also canned homemade peach jam too!

WOW! I've never done canning. Is it hard? We live in a more farming area now and I'm hoping to get into big time gardening and I'd love to try my hand at it. The sauce looks great and much healthier than the store bought type. Course those peaches look great. Happy WW! Do you have pics of your garden?

Wow! You have been busy. My parents do the same thing and then give a lot to me. All the yummy with none of the work. I love my mommy:)

ReplyDeleteCan you tell me exactly which attachment you use to deseed and skin the tomatoes? I have a KA too and if it works I am all over it. I made sauce a few years ago and did it all by hand. Made me swear off doing it again. If the attachment works well, I would def try again.

That all looks so good!! I have lost so many tomatoes this year simply because I haven't had the time!! I really need to get one of those strainers for my kitchen-aid - I think that would make a HUGE difference!!
ReplyDeleteCan you share your recipe for your sauce? I usually wing it when I make a fresh sauce, sometimes successfully sometimes not so much :) I would love a good solid recipe to use!

ReplyDeleteHOLY CRAP! I totally need to plant more tomatoes next year and make my own sauce ! LOL! I picked out ten yesterday and then took the skin off and gutted and froze them in quarters. I'm not sure I would know what I'm doing making sauce but yours looks excellent!

And I really, really would love to can my own spaghetti sauce...we eat TONS of it!!
oh, and I forgot to ask... what is your attachment?? I have a KA, and didn't realize I could get an attchment that did that!
