Adventures in Parenting- Escape from the Crib

My second son Eli has been physically adept from the moment he was born. It seemed like he reached all the physical milestones way too early! Perhaps it is because he is trying to keep up with his older brother. Whatever the case, Eli started walking when he was ten months old and he has been running, climbing, and keeping me on my toes ever since!

In our latest adventure, Eli somehow figured out how to climb out of his crib late last week. This is NOT good because this is the kid that has been opening doors for a few months. I was sure we were in for trouble, but then he didn't do it again....

until Wednesday night. You knew it had to happen eventually, right?

When we put Eli to bed that night he climbed out of bed and opened his bedroom door after a few minutes. So Honey Daddy put him back in bed and told him "No, No!". After a few minutes he was at it again. This time I went and put him back in bed and told him it was time to go "Night-night" and he needed to stay in bed.

This went on for the next half hour or so. Finally Eli gave up and had cried so much that he fell asleep. I figured that he would learn to stay in bed when we put him down and then he would just sleep through the night and our problem would be solved.

Not so! At about 4:30 a.m. we woke up to the sound of little feet on the kitchen floor. Eli climbed out of his crib in the middle of the night, opened his door, and was walking around upstairs. How scary is that?

So Honey Daddy closed the flip latch on the back door and put Eli back to bed. Then I spent the next half hour or so putting him back in bed until he eventually gave up and went back to sleep. I spent the next hour or so listening for the little monkey to make sure he stayed in bed.

Needless to say, I didn't get tons of sleep that night... and neither did Eli, which made for a long day. I got to go shopping for door knob covers in hopes of keeping Eli stuck in his room, if not actually in his bed.

By nap time that day Eli was so exhausted that he went to sleep without any problems. Then when Honey Daddy got home he took the front railing off the crib temporarily so that Eli can actually get back into bed when he gets out.

Eli seemed delighted to be able to get into and out of his bed this evening. He wasn't so thrilled when we put him to bed and he discovered that he could not get out of his bedroom.

It looks like this weekend Honey Daddy will work on getting the other bunk bed frame set up in Eli's room. Then we will be off to buy a mattress. I guess Eli has decided that at 18 months old he is done with the crib and wants a big boy bed!

  1. That sounds about right. I think my son was about 18 months when he just was DONE with that crib thing! Good luck on the big boy bed transition!

  2. No going back now. Hopefully he'll stay in his bed and the transition will go well. I'm betting it will. :)

  3. oh the joys! I moved my oldest into a toddler bed at 18 months, but am hoping the my younger son will last in the crib longer, but I doubt it. At least you hear the little guy walking around in the middle of the night

  4. Sounds like he has an adventurous spirit! My Melody was (is) like that...a climber and very much a risk taker! We actually still keep a door spinner on her door just because I'm nervous she'd come out and walk around the house in the middle of the night too!

  5. Oh my gosh. The 16 month old I nanny for has climbed out a few times only I don't know until I go up to check on her and there she is just playing in her room!

  6. I can totally relate to accelerated abilites of the "2nd child". Just when you think you have things kinda figured out from the first child, the second one totally changes up the game.

  8. We have been so lucky that our twins are almost 3 and are still in their cribs. My son did climb out once...well - 'attempted' to climb out and fell on his head and that seemed to scare him enough (& his sister) to not do it again. We'll see how much longer it lasts!

    Good luck with the transition!

  9. My mom had this same problem with me. Her solution was to tie an old volleyball net around my crib. I don't know if that would fly these days...

  12. What a silly story! I love how independent he is! Go ahead and get him a big boy bed with rails, what can it hurt! Well I guess it could hurt his head if he falls out. So, get him a big boy bed with rails to keep him in.
Very cute story! Thanks for stopping by my blog today! I should have my PSF up tomorrow. You are way better at this posting thing than I am!

  13. Sounds like my Bina. Only now she uses every trick in the book to get out of bed. She's been in a twin bed once she turned 18 months. Connie is the one to watch for. He'll wake up at the crack of dawn and sneak every treat in the house.

  20. He sure is a cute little climber! When you have older siblings you gotta keep up somehow!

We heard a thud upstairs and realized our youngest son had learned how to drop out of the crib. He wasn't really graceful. :)

  21. At least you got 19 months out of the crib, some of my children refused to ever sleep in one!

  23. Hope the transition goes well. :)

We got both kids out of the crib by 8 months. Both times, we did it after a vacation... when they had to recover from jet lag and had to adjust anyway.

  24. Wow! I always worried about my kiddo getting out of his crib and causing harm to himself. We did actually have a scary moment a few years back. When he was two he climbed out of his crib, {we live in a one floor home} went to the sliding doors, flipped the latch and went into the backyard. Luckily, we had a fence, but I was still asleep and Hubby was out for a run. He came back from his run screaming at me, asking after kiddo/ I had no clue. We saw the doors open and he was playing in the dirt outside. I went out that day and got stoppers for the doors and a sliding latch for the front door. Also, I set the alarm chimes to go off when the doors open. Take care.

  25. I had an early mover, too. It really does keep you on your toes! She would climb out of her crib and up her dresser during nap time!
    I am loving your blog!
I just started a new blog and I'd love for you to stop by...
