The Trouble with Number Two

At aerobics this morning one of my friends asked me how potty training with Boy Number Two is going, since she knew we started a week ago on Monday. I figured that potty training with Eli would be harder than it was with Jonah, but I never really figured on HOW it would be harder.

The first couple of days of potty training were rough. Since we go directly to underwear with no pull-ups, I expect a bit of a learning curve. We mostly stayed inside and spent lots of time going to the bathroom; but with rewards for going on the potty, Eli learned pretty quickly and things got better.  On Friday and Saturday day we had absolutely NO ACCIDENTS, even though we spent time out and about shopping (and visiting many public restrooms)! Can you believe it? I was singing the hallelujah chorus and we were all happy.

For just a moment I thought I was mostly finished with potty training! Believe it or not, Jonah trained just that fast. Ha! Not so fast, Mommy! The inevitable happened... for the past three days we have had an accident every day. Only one accident per day is pretty good, right?!

Well, it WOULD be pretty good... if the accidents weren't all the dreaded Number Two! Ugh!

Dealing with this kind of accident makes us all feel a bit like this:

I don't understand how Eli can stay dry for 5 days in a row and yet not make it to go poop on the potty! We go to the bathroom at least once or twice an hour, but if I don't get him to the bathroom at the random right moment, then I end up with yuck!

I guess the good news is that we are making progress. This evening Eli actually told me he needed to go potty! He had already started to do his business, but at least he caught himself. Maybe we will get through this potty training business after all.

That would be nice because I love this boy and I would really like to keep him. :o)

  1. It also took a few months to potty train my #2 boy.. I hope that it will be easier when the time comes to potty train #3.

  3. So funny, sorry! Potty training my boy #2 was quite hard too, but the day did finally come. But it took him carrying me his poop to get there. You should check out that post, it is pretty funny!

  4. You're on your way. :) I much prefer potty training boys than girls --especially when you need to be out and about.

  7. Hiiii!!! Seems like forever since the last time I was here. Don't know how I have missed your blog for so long. We are getting close to those potty training days here and thought I am excited I am also fearing the poop in the undies. That is the one thing my little brother just couldn't manage for months. he was fine with everything else but when it came to poop he just didn't go in the bathroom. I hope you pooping insident doesn't last as long.

p.s. I just started a Wordish Wednesday link up and I would love to have you join :)

  8. I think for me it will be easier to train child #2, but then we are still having issues with child #1. And even after a few months Blake still does #2 in his pants from time to time... potty training stinks!!

  10. I'm scared to death at the thought of potty training but I'm going to start (again) here in a week or so. I'd like to have him potty trained by Halloween...or Thanksgiving...or Christmas. LOL

  11. Well good luck with that. I don't have kids yet so Potty training my dog was pretty easy...but you probably don't want to use the method I did.. spank them and send them outside. I love the second photo..his expression is priceless!

  12. He's adorable!

We're having problems with #2. While he did great on #1 but he will threw hell at me for #2 and I still giving up and put his pull-ups then back to 'big boy undies' again. Sigh. Good luck, mama!

  13. awww and soon it will be no accidents. I was curious how old he is? I have two boys too and my now 4 yr old ws trained in 2 weeks at age 2 1/2. We did just like you for the first 2 days then I let him tell me when he had to go if it was longer than a half hr after a meal I would suggest we try.

the poop part was difficult with my daughter she would hold it
but she hated when the water would splash up it would scare her. WE found that if we read a book or distracted with something it helped her to relax and just go

Good luck. Potty training is an adventure in deed

  15. All three of The Dudes had "issues" with #2. #1 went in his pants, while hiding. #2 went in his pants, while looking in my eyes and kicking me in the shins. And #3 just wouldn't go, for days. Not sure why it's so hard, but once you whip that poopy monkey life will be gooood! Good luck!

  16. Well, the good news is he's adorable!! And although I don't miss those potty training days in particular I do miss those toddler days. Sigh. Good luck. Sounds like you are really close. Enjoy these days. They grow up way too fast. Happy WW!

  17. We just (re)started potty training Jack. He managed to stay dry most of the day today, but wants nothing to do with pooping on the potty. Tomorrow its supposed to be raining, I figure its the perfect day to just stay home and keep working (oh and we also went right underwear the only, just diapers at night, and he will get pullups on Sunday when he goes out with my Mother for the day b/c she can't handle the underwear duty for the whole day with him yet!)

  19. I ended up using showers to clean them up from the kids' #2 accidents. I used them consistently (even where we were in a hurry) and without anger, and it didn't take them long after that to realize that they could get back to playing even faster if they would just use the toilet in the first place.

Each of my 5 kids was a totally different story with potty training. Some super easy, others not so much!

    Good luck!
