Laborious Labor Day

What did you do on Labor Day?

Fall is a busy time of year at our house because we have to do something with all the produce from our garden. So Monday we were pretty busy here at the Honey House!

We picked a few of these from our garden:

We actually ended up with 6 big bowls of tomatoes, which I quartered (which took an hour!) and ran through my strainer to get rid of the seeds and skins (almost another hour).

Then we added some of these from our garden.

Honey Daddy chopped up the peppers and onions while I was working on the tomatoes.

We turned all our home-grown, garden-fresh produce into this:

A big ole pot of salsa!

We boiled the salsa down. Then we spent most of the late afternoon and evening putting all that salsa into these:

Count 'em! 30 pints of salsa.

These beauties will soon be lining the shelves of my pantry. It's a good thing too! Did I ever tell you that Jonah loves salsa? After he eats it on his chips he asks me if he can drink the rest!

See, I'm not kidding you!

Would you believe after all that I still went on a 16 mile bike ride later that evening?!
Whew!

  16. Oooo, I LOVE that picture of all the pints lined up! So beautiful!! And of course, the picture of your li'l salsa-drinker cracks me up, too! Too funny.

Our summer was just not good for tomatoes this year. We've got a few that are FINALLY ripening, but certainly nothing that we can't keep up with eating raw and it won't be many more days before we start getting overnight frost. But what a good thing I've still got LAST year's crop of tomatoes sitting in frozen puree!!

  20. Thats a whole lotta salsa! I love salsa, my favorite that I just mastered is Pico de Gallo though. My husband is from El Salvodor so he has grown up with Pico de Gallo being served weekly. He is so happy that I finally know how to make it just like his mom!

Also, stopping by to let you know that you have won the MJM Book giveaway on my blog! Congrats! I sent you an email too. Thanks for entering. ")
