It's Just a Haircut, Not the Spanish Inquisition!

One of the great things about having little boys is that their hair is so low maintenance. Once you get it cut, basically all you have to do is run a comb through it in the morning (if you remember) and you're done!

If only getting a haircut wasn't such a traumatic experience.

At our house, I cut Honey Daddy's hair and he cuts the boys' hair. Maybe that's because I have to take the role of comforter since Jonah definitely does not like having his hair cut. Maybe I'm a mean mommy, but I think these pictures are kind of funny.

It's not torture, I promise! RELAX!

While we were in Tucson all my guys got their hair cut. We usually spent the first half of Jonah's haircut trying to distract him and reminding him that it doesn't hurt. It is my job to try to get him to hold his head still (instead of moving away from the razor) so that daddy can get the job done quickly. Do you know how hard it is to get a two-year-old to hold still?

It will be over before you know it!

I sing songs, tell stories... you name it. By the time we are mostly finished Jonah has calmed down enough to realize that it really doesn't hurt at all!

That wasn't so bad after all!

He is better than he used to be, but I look forward to the day when getting a haircut doesn't result in tears!

  1. oh I soooo know that face. actually I saw it twice this week as I tried to trim Blake's hair... you'd think I was trying to cut it with garden sheers or something else scary like that... glad it's not just me

  2. Such cute pictures. I tried cutting my 15 yr old's hair when he was 2 or 3 but I butchered it....real bad. We tried a hairdressed but he just screamed the whole time.

Finally we just bought a Flowbee (you can find it mentioned on my sidebar I think, if not just ask me and I'll send you the link if you're interested). Anyway, you hook it up to your vaccuum and it kinds of sucks the hair up, no mess.

My husband and both of my son's use it to cut their hair. It can cut angles and layers so it works fine. BTW, I am not joking here. They haven't paid for a haircut in about twelve years.

  3. That's great that your husband cuts your boys' hair. Have you tried putting on a video? :)

  4. This is what the kids I nanny for do everytime I wash their hair....

  5. OhMyGosh!! This soooo reminds me of my son Shane. He's nearly 17 now, but when he was little he had a total fit while getting his hair cut!!!! SCREAMING, and the tears and everything! It was sooo embarrassing. He is a blond too, so I 100% "get" what you all went through!

    It does get better....eventually!!

If, when?, I get my whole list done, I'm getting a Mommy manicure/pedicure!! I'm way overdue and it will feel sooooo good!!!!!

  6. That's why The Good Lord invented buzz cuts! Try cutting a little girl's hair who doesn't want to sit still!

  9. Maybe this makes me a bad mommy, but I give my kids a sucker each haircut, so the won't scream and will hold still. And, I also think the pics are hilarious!

  10. I pay a ridiculous amount so my little guy can play video games while he gets his cut.

Hope yours relaxes with it soon.

  11. OMG, what cute pictures!!! Even with those tears he is still so adorable. My boys are finally a bit better with haircuts, but they have both had their days of tears, that's for sure! I'm impressed your hubby does the cuts, I usually take my boys to my hair salon, lol.

  12. I cute my husbands hair and my sons hair as well so I know how difficult it can be to keep a toddler still long enough to trim the edges and run some trimmers through the top.

Daddy normally comforts and I do a quick trim and then we always make him happy at the end by giving him a bath... he loves that treat!!

    Cute pictures!!

  14. I do not have the patience to do this. You aren't mean -- you must be a saint.
    The pictures are awesome!

  15. we're finally to the point with our boys that haircuts aren't total torture. I can totally relate to those photos!

  16. I leave all the haircuts to my husband, unless it is my daughter's, then I let the pros do it!

  17. So funny (yes..they are funny because WE KNOW it doesn't really hurt). My son was the EXAXCT same way until he was a little after 2 and then he was fine just like that. I wonder if that is why some moms let their little boys hair grow so long?

  18. I have all girls, so don't have to worry about that except for my hubby. And I'm a hairstylist to boot, so I get to do it when it needs to be done.

    Cute pictures!

  19. My dad always cut my brothers hair and they would cry and cry and cry. Now my brother has a son and is cutting his hair and guess what? He cries and cries and cries.

I wonder why getting your hair cut is so scary??

Oh, even crying he is totally cute.

  20. Awww! What is it that makes them so scared?! My son did the exact same thing when he was little. I put off getting his hair cut for the longest time!

  21. I recognize that face...We have actually let Tommy's hair grow quite long at times to avoid that face!! Of course when Nana took him last time he was an angel and came home to tell us how fun it was (go figure!!)

  22. Have to admit, I take the candy route too. I don't do suckers anymore though; we got too much hair on them. I like life savers, especially now that my son will suck them instead of chomp them! We have done the movie thing too!

  23. I did chuckle looking at your pictures. I don't know what it is with kids and haircuts--maybe it's those big, sharp, scary-looking scissors coming at you with the look of death. I don't know. But cute pictures! I've always cut my kids' hair (and hubby's too).

  24. oh your poor little man - maybe it is the sound of the clippers

    ReplyDelete
  25. My son still doesn't like hair cuts because he stresses about the outcome! What if it doesn't come out all right. Luckily we had a good few years like between 6 and 11!

  26. Those tears make me so sad! My son is into having long hair now. He is starting to let his personality shine through!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Oh he looks so handsome! Totally worth the meltdown moments.

    ReplyDelete
  28. awww poor thing lol.. those pics are adorable tho.. at least it is not really hurting him lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. I have the same problem with my son.

You think we were really hurting the kid.

At least it's easy once the hair is cut. I can't imagine trying to comb a girl's hair everyday.

  30. Jonah is so cute even when he's upset. Maybe next time he'll remember it doesn't hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would probably laugh too. It's funny what they think is scary!

  32. ok...we had a bad actual cut/style experience, but my kid loved it...ok, it was in a horse chair and she was watching a DVD, but kuddos for you pushing thru!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. hehe. That is sad and funny. Poor kiddo!

  34. Stick with it my son did this for years unfortunately and now as a teen is a grump about getting a hair cut still!

  35. He is such a handsome little guy! I love the series of shots. Izzy was just over wo when she FINALLY had enough hair to trim. She did okay but the second time she didn't. LOL! If they only knew worse things can be done than a haircut. LOL!

  36. Oh man, I HATE doing haircuts! I finally quit and take them in as they would run off on me during the hair cut, no kidding! It was horrible! And then my oldest (9) decided he wanted to grow his hair out like all the boys are doing however he didn't want to fix it so he just had this bushy mess and finally I talked him into getting it cut (just a little) and they took off more than I thought and he told me afterwards, "mom, I really don't care about my hair, I just hate haircuts". UGH!

I have told you this many times...Your boys are super cute.

  37. Poor thing. It's sad, but funny. Only because it's not my kiddo.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Awwww, poor guy. Cade never really cried so much, but he still to this day will NOT let a man touch his hair. Kids are funny about things like this I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  39. WOW! I only have one boy and I never had to go thru this! He loved to get his hair cut, especially when the razor came out. He loved the sound of it! Weird I know!

However I remember all too well the kicking and screaming of my 2 little brothers when they got their hair cut. And you should have seen them when it was time for a fingernail trim!

    ReplyDelete
  40. He's cute even when he's crying! And he looks great with his new cut!

We just cut our boys' hair for the first time last weekend b/c it's getting expensive and my youngest won't sit still for anyone!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Awwww poor baby!!! :( Looks good in the end though! What a cutie!!

  42. Dum Dums or a Blow.Pop. Sure fire ways to have a happy kiddo while getting a haircut. Ryder used to be scared until we introduced him to a sucker. Now, he loves it and doesn't even move!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh my Joshua is the same way! He HATES haircuts!!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Awwww, that's so sad! Do I need to call child protective services on you??? I don't know if they'll believe you that it wasn't abuse....threatening a child with scissors, and then taking pictures of him and laughing....tsk, tsk! haha!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Great shots! Those are the perfect ones to break out in front of future girlfriends :)

  46. He's cute! I remember those days of crocodile tears while getting hair cuts. :)

  47. I do know what it is like! I cut the hair around here -- all the hair. Scott is terrible! He cries and moves and freaks out every time I bring out the scissors I only use the shaver for the clean - up and most of the time he ends up with half a hair cut because neither of us can take it any longer! He hates the hair to get on him because it is itchy and he hates the shaver cause it is loud! When My mom was here she sat there and talked with him and kept him distracted, but for the rest of the time it is pure torture!

  48. Haha, it may still be awhile. Connie was so good when he was two and I cut his hair. Now he won't let me touch his head. More then once I cut it too short then I wanted to and he didn't like it either. Oh he'd show it off to everyone and tell them that his Mommy did it. But then he'd look in the mirror make a sad face and say "Where's my hair?"

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh for life to be that simple again that the scariest thing is a hair cut! I was quite a scaredy cat myself when I was little so I can relate. Glad that you do fun things to distract him. Of course, he might be crying cause mom is taking pictures of him crying!! :):) Great camera.

  50. I have 2 boys, and have gone throught the exact same thing. My oldest is now 13, and is going on his first ever - "I'm letting my hair grow longer" stage. My husband just cut my 3 yr. old's hair this weekend - tears, but not as many as usual. He mostly hates the itchiness.
