That's Mommy to you, Mister!

Please call me Mommy
Why are you calling me Mom?
I am not that old!

For some reason Jonah has started to call me Mom occasionally and every time he does I just cringe. It's kind of the same reaction I experience when I am called "Ma'am" in public. I just think... That's NOT my name! Don't call me that!

I definitely haven't ever referred to myself as Mom. I don't know about you, but for some reason I didn't expect him to start calling me that until he was.... I don't know, like 12! Not when he is just two.

I don't have a problem with being called Mom per se... I guess my real problem is that's what I call MY mom and she's WAY older than me! (you know I love you Mom!)

I don't think that I would particularly like being called Mother either... but then again, everyone probably has their own preference, right?

Maybe I should go call my Mom and see if she would rather I call her Mommy from now on! :o)

  1. Elliot called me mom when he was three. I told him he had to be five to do that. He bought it. He turns five in 10 days. He's been practicing saying mom - but mommy is soooo ingrained. Ha ha, I win! I am mommy. FOREVER.

  2. I kind of went backwards, I think, calling my mom "mom" but then later mysteriously going with "mommy" for a little while. Fun haiku!

  3. I remember the first time mommy or mama went to mom. I was like huh? Go back. I'm not mom yet! :)

  4. Personally, I love "mama" because it just seems so cozy and full of love. "Mom" is okay to me, but not best. And "mother" would totally trip me out. I think I remember all of my kids starting to experiment with the "mom" names starting around age 2 as well. It's yet another moment they assert their independence and make their own choices. Silly kids.

  8. That's cute.

My daughter calls me every form of MOM you can think of...

Mamma, Mommy, Mom, MomMom, Mammoo, Mum, Mumma, Moo...anything she can think of...My favorite is MomMom! But if I tell her that she is SURE to stop using it.

  9. It isn't a matter of age, just a new word for them...my teens call me all forms of mom, and now I know their moods by what word they choose.

  12. Yeah well the older they get it doesn't get any better. Now that Jacob is almost 12 I get Mom but also Ma. So enjoy the Mommy years. Apparently that's not so macho when they get older. lol

Also good luck on the contest over at Tiffany's. Thanks for the lovely compliments.

  13. That is so funny. When my girls started calling me or referring to me as *mother* is when I knew we needed to have a talk, "Hey, Mom" was suddendly ok. :)

  22. This is so funny. My 11 year old calls me mom. He wouldn't be caught dead calling me anything else. My little ones call me Mama usually and I like it. I always call my mom just Ma. I like that too:) I think we call all feel your unease. Motherhood is such a unique common experience!

  23. I too remember this new chapter and was not very fond of it either. My kids are VERY spread out (I have a junior in high school and one that just started kindergarten) so I am lucky enough that I actually still have one calling me Momma. ;)

  25. I just noticed my almost 9 y/o called me mommy this morning and I thought how sweet as he started to call me mom when he was just a toddler. So they do go back to mommy (or maybe that's just to get something???) :-)

  26. i still call my mom, mommy from time to time. Connie calls me mommy. Bina calls me mom, it's one of her few words. Otherwise I wouldn't have a name. It will definatly change to mommy because she does everything her big brother does. (I hope)
