My Knight in a Shining Tiara?

Jonah has the cutest little friend that he just loves to play with. She is four years old, and I absolutely adore her. This afternoon we were cordially invited to attend a knight and princess party at her house. All of the girls got to wear tiaras and my boys got their own knight masks.

I can't think of a better way to spend a cold, cloudy afternoon. Don't we look fabulous?!

Just for kicks I tried to put my princess crown on Jonah. You can see from the photo just how well that went over!

Get this off me! I'm not a GIRL!

What did you do today?

I Built a Car to Run Over the March Lion

This morning I was struggling to drag myself out of bed. I couldn't figure out why I didn't feel like getting up, since I wasn't especially tired. Then I looked out the window.

What on earth?!

Last night we got 3-4 inches of snow! I found myself wondering if somehow I had been transported back to January or something. Except in January I didn't have daffodils and tulips buried under the snow.

Poor cold flowers!

This little guy escaped the avalanche by huddling close to the house. I don't even know what kind of flower this is, but it made me happy to see the pink amongst the whiteness!

I suppose what I could have bundled up the boys and gone to play outside in the snow... except it was about 30 degrees outside and VERY windy. So that would have made the whole experience pretty miserable.

So instead we went and played at a friend's house today, and made similar plans for tomorrow.

We have been spending quite a bit of time inside lately and I have to say that if you have been stuck inside for days (and days and days!), I highly recommend making a car out of a cardboard box. It has kept Jonah occupied for hours. He has been driving his car everywhere, and "parking" it by the tall, skinny cardboard house I made for him.

This weekend Honey Daddy helped Jonah "pimp out" his car. They put on shiny (aluminum foil) headlights, tail lights, signal lights, and even a little custom license plate. Tonight while I am working they are going to add fancy hub caps on the "stock tires" I put on the car.

Sometimes the simplest toys really are the best ones.

April Sunshine?

The weather this week has been cold, wet, windy and dismal. This morning there was an inch of snow on the ground!

Aren't we done with winter yet?! Spring means rain not snow, right?

I could write the month of March a sarcastically humorous letter or two, but I guess you could say I've been there and done that. It appears that all I do lately is moan about the weather. I know it's March, so it's not supposed to be sunny and beautiful the entire time... but the teasing is driving me crazy! We get some gorgeous warm days and I have a blast outside with the boys... then BAM! we get a snowstorm, it's absolutely freezing, and we all get stir-crazy stuck indoors for days at a time.

Is March always like this? Is this Spring really that unusual, or do I suffer from some sort of weather amnesia?

To be honest, I can't really remember what the weather was like in March last year. You see, I was a bit preoccupied with something someone else.

With little baby Eli I was a bit too busy to be thinking about the weather. By the time I was ready to go out, the weather was lovely.

This March Eli is not so little anymore, and my two active boys want to be out and about RIGHT NOW! Luckily it looks like this latest storm has moved past us for now and next week is supposed to be warmer and drier. I guess I may not go crazy after all.

Hooray for April!

Trouble is My Middle Name

Little Eli seems to know exactly what he needs to do to get into trouble. For example, if at any time you are not keeping an eye on him, Eli will head straight for the bathroom. If you are lucky, then the door to the bathroom is closed. If not... look out!

If you were unfortunate enough to forget to put the lid down on the toilet, then you will find Eli up to his elbows in toilet water. If you are somewhat fortunate you will find him just playing in the water. If you are less fortunate he will be dunking a variety of toys in the potty. Oh joy!

Eli is also fond of closing doors in our house, which I find to be a bit annoying. Especially since I inevitably have to go let him out of whatever room he is stuck in, only to have him shut himself in another room. I have told him not to shut the doors a gazillion times, but he's just barely one and doesn't quite get "No" all of the time yet.

Sometimes I have to just give up and laugh at all the funny things my little boy does. After all, he's just exploring his world, right?

He loves to play in the sandbox now with his older brother. This Saturday while they were playing I caught him doing this with the sand shovel.

Is there something tasty on this big spoon?

Luckily there wasn't much sand actually on the shovel, and I was planning to bathe the boys anyway. So I just let them get dirty.

When I told Eli the shovel was yucky, he was kind enough to offer it to me.

You want to try it, Mommy?

Thanks Buddy, but no thank you!

From Wonderful Weekend to Wacky Weather!

Friday and Saturday were absolutely gorgeous around here! The weather was warm and sunny. I was excited, thinking we had entered the time of year where I can hang my clothes out on the line to take advantage of the sun and heat. Aren't they lovely?

Honey Daddy had a three day weekend because of Spring Break at the local university. So he worked on projects outside with Jonah's help. What a great helper! Jonah helped Daddy work in the yard, the garden, and in the garage. Here is a photo of my guys working to rotate the tires on the cars and grease the joints. How wonderful is it to have such handy men about?

The boys got to play outside quite a bit both in the sandbox and the yard. I helped Jonah figure out how to push Eli on this little car. They had a great time together.

It's a good thing we had a couple of nice days because this morning we woke up to SNOW. It is snowing lightly here now, which I think is completely disgusting. I know the snow won't stay, and I just hope that it doesn't get below freezing tonight. Last year we got about two apricots because of late spring frosts. I would like to get a few more than that this year!

Blossoms Popping on my Apricot Tree

Last night I was outside with the boys, playing in the sandbox and in the yard as the sun was going down. The weather has been pleasant, but still cool enough that we were wearing jackets.

As we ran around the yard a little speck of white caught my eye.

These are the only two blossoms that have popped out so far. I am hoping the rest wait a couple of days. We are supposed to get a storm by Monday, and I don't want the blossoms to freeze off! I have plans for those apricots!

Ride 'em Cowboy!

This weekend we got out the only dress up outfit my little boy has. They make so many princess dresses, etc. for little girls, but it's hard to find cute play clothes for boys!

Jonah got these for Christmas, so I don't know why it took us so long to get them out. He was having such a great time playing cowboy with his stick horse.

We had to borrow a hat from Honey Daddy, but somehow that only made it more fun for him.

Isn't he absolutely adorable?

Spring Greening

This weekend the weather was finally gorgeous again! We spent the entire day outside on Saturday and we were loving it! The lawn is greening up and my tulips and daffodils are starting to come up.

Hooray for green and hooray for spring! We even planted our early spring crop of peas and lettuce, since they do well in slightly chilly weather. We are looking forward to planting the rest of our garden in the coming months. I just love picking and eating tomatoes, peppers, and berries... especially ones that we grew ourselves. They taste SO good!

Thinking about our lovely garden from last year reminded me of this picture. Apparently I am not the only one who enjoys veggies fresh from the garden.

I remember last year how much Jonah wanted to eat this green pepper right after we picked it. I snapped this photo at just the right moment, and it still cracks me up.

I hope you are enjoying some green too. If not, click on the button below to see some more green... and faces of course.

Face Full of Cake

My little baby turned one this week, so of course we had to have cake! I made Eli a little birthday cake just his size. At first he seemed a bit puzzled by the whole experience:

Why are they singing to me,
and what am I supposed to do with this thing?

So we helped him get a little taste of the cake. It was all over for the poor cake after that!

Mmm! This is yummy... and sticky!

He would alternate between eating bites of cake and squishing it in his fingers. Then he would shake his hand, trying to figure out how to get the sticky stuff off his fingers. It was hilarious!

I think he really enjoyed his birthday cake (and the bath that followed). What do you think?

March Madness

Remember on last week when I was moaning about the cold and nasty weather we were having? I even wrote a letter telling the month of March that we couldn't be friends anymore because he was not playing nice.

Well, apparently not only is March a bit capricious... he also has a bit of a temper. This is how my pretty yellow crocuses looked like this morning around 10 a.m.

I thought that my flowers were goners for sure. Luckily it seems that crocuses are not just pretty, they are also tough. Here are the same flowers this afternoon around 4 p.m.

Hello Yellow! Way to go flowers!

What a difference six hours makes, huh? So take that March! Spring is going to happen whether you like it or not!

See who else is feeling Wordful.

Tuesday's Tribute: The First Year

Happy Birthday Eli!

I can't believe you are already one! When did you get to be so big? It seems like just yesterday that we brought you home from the hospital. You were such a cute little guy that I could just eat you up!

The first few weeks of your life are all a bit of a blur to me now, but what can you expect from a woman running on so little sleep?! I do remember that it was a bit of an adjustment to take care of you and your older brother, but before long we got things worked out.

It helped that you were such a good baby! You only cried when you had a good reason to, which I really appreciated.

It also helped that you slept a lot the first few months. :o)

How could you not love a face like this?

Before long you were discovering the world around you. You were so alert and interested in the everything. It was so much fun when you started interacting with us. We loved to watch you smiling, cooing, and playing with toys.

Then came the stuffing of everything into your mouth... including your toes.

Before I knew it you were rolling over and getting into everything. You loved your newly found ability to get around by yourself and before long I caught you doing this:

Life got much more exciting for me when you started crawling and pulling yourself up! Every day was a new adventure.

We shared some fun adventures this year, didn't we?

Do you remember this Fall and how interesting you thought the leaves were? Of course we also discovered that they are not so tasty.

We had tons of fun celebrating holidays this year with our two boys. Remember Halloween? How I loved my little superman.

As winter approached we spent more time inside. I think you were mostly o.k. with that because you didn't really like the snow too much. (I did get you to smile for a picture though :o).

Now it seems that you have grown so big! (which probably has something to do with all the food you have been eating lately!) You have not only figured out this whole walking thing, you are practically running everywhere. I guess you are just trying to keep up with your older brother. I can tell the two of you are going to be great friends.

I am glad that I get to watch you grow and learn. It is so fun to watch you explore the world around you.

We love you so much and are glad that you joined our little family.

Here Comes the Sun! (hopefully)

Hooray for a new week!

The end of last week was quite the experience at the Honey House.
Tuesday evening Honey Daddy came home from work feeling sick. He had a bit of a fever and was pretty congested. Just that afternoon Jonah woke up from his nap with a bit of a cough. I was afraid he might be getting croup, which has been going around.

Just when you think that everyone is going to be healthy because Eli is finally getting over his cough! Sheesh. So we cranked up the humidifier and called off the playgroup that was scheduled to be at our house on Wednesday. Instead we all spent the day at home. Normally that wouldn't be a bad thing, but it isn't exactly fun when you are fighting sickness. Luckily Jonah's cough never got any worse, but the weather was icky and we were stuck inside.

Two active boys, stuck inside with a sick Daddy. Not fun.

Honey Daddy went to work a half day Thursday, mostly to get some things he could work on from home. I took the boys to the library for story time and just to get out of the house. Friday the sick Daddy stayed home all day again, and I took the boys to play at a friends house. We had an o.k. time, but everyone was a bit grumpy.

It was probably the weather... it was cloudy, icky, cold, and it snowed again on Friday night. Bleeaacck! Stinky March.

Luckily the snow melted on Saturday, and Sunday it got a little warmer. Today it is supposed to be rainy/snowy and icky, but after tomorrow morning we are supposed to have sunshine for the rest of the week!

I am so excited! I can't wait for some sunshine!

Lamb or Lion?

Dear March-

Why must you taunt me so? Just when I thought that we were going to be agreeable and enjoy some time together, you just had to go and ruin everything!

I thought we had decided that this whole "in like a lamb, out like a lion" thing was just a silly superstition and we could dispense with the "lion" part all together. I even praised you in my last post, and the beautiful flowers that you brought me. Then you went and did the unthinkable.

That's IT! Look at my poor, cold, yellow babies! I just don't think we can be friends anymore.

Go ahead. Have your little tantrum this weekend. Blow off some steam and rain on my parade all you want. I am SO over you. I always liked April better anyway.

Hello Yellow!

By now you have probably figured out that I have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Spring. I have been looking forward to warmer weather and playing outside for weeks... no, make that MONTHS.

Today was a bit windy, but our thermometer said we got up to 68 degrees or so. I was in heaven! We played outside in the sun and went for a walk... it was SO nice.

In my flower beds, someone else came out today to see the sun too.

Isn't yellow a happy color?

Happy, happy, joy, joy!

Go check out some other Wordful peeps.

When Being in a Hurry STINKS.

The past couple of days have been deceptively beautiful. It looks nice and sunny outside, but it is actually windy and cold.

So my boys have been getting a little stir crazy after being able to go out and play last weekend. I called a friend and we decided to get together so our kids could play.

After Eli's morning nap I got everything together to head out the door. I had a limited window of playtime between Eli's morning and afternoon nap, so I was in a bit of a hurry to get there. You know how it is... putting shoes and socks on, packing up the diaper bag, getting snacks together, grabbing jackets, and carrying the small one and diaper bag out the door with a two-year-old in tow.

I got everything in the car and started to strap the boys in their carseats. It was then I noticed the distinctive odor of a poopy diaper.

Oh well! I thought. I'll just have to change Eli when we get there.

We arrived at my friends house and I grabbed the diaper bag and the boys. I left my jacket in the car because I didn't think I would need it, and we headed inside. As soon as everyone was settled, I checked Eli, only to find that he wasn't stinky.

Hmm... I thought. I know I smelled something. Maybe one of the boys just let a stinky one or something, they are boys after all.

We played and had a great time. I didn't think any more about the stinky smell, until I went to put the boys back in the car to go home. As soon as I opened the car door, I smelled that same yucky smell. I checked Eli again and he was still clean!

What on earth? Why am I smelling stinky diapers?

At this point I was a bit confused...
until I noticed that not only was my jacket in the front seat of the car, but also a plastic bag containing dirty diapers that I was going to throw in the trash can on my way to the car! Obviously that didn't happen in my hurry to get out the door.

I promptly threw the diapers in my friend's can and had a good laugh about it on the way home.
